what is it

Mighty Milers is a school and community-based program that instills the daily habit of running and/or walking for physical fitness and overall health in elementary students.  It is a free program to our school that is sponsored by the New York City Roadrunners.  This is our 8th year accepted into this program.

The Mighty Milers program gives kids the opportunity and encouragement to get moving and release energy constructively. Kids improve their aerobic fitness, set and strive for individual goals, and improve their focus in the classroom.

Ultimately, Mighty Milers teaches students the enjoyment, importance and habit of physical activity as a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle.

Their goal for the year is to run 26.2 miles (marathon), but many of them will run much more.

As they accumulate miles, they earn incentives along the way.   The prizes they earn along the way include:

5 miles= Membership card

13.1 miles (1/2 marathon)= water bottle

20 miles= t-shirt and key chain

26.2 miles = Marathon medal

when is it

Over the school year, students in grades 1-5 set goals to run and/or walk a certain distance and earn rewards for reaching milestones along the way.

where is it

I record their activities during PE and recess if they choose to run or walk laps.  They can also record their activities on a fitness calendar (that I will give them) and these activities will be transferred into miles.  Any type of activities outside of school can be included on the calendar and once turned into me, I will transfer them into miles.
